High Acuity Low Occurrence (HALO) Emergency Procedures
A consultant-led, hands-on course designed to build confidence and competence in rare, time-critical procedures during trauma resuscitation and peri-arrest care. Content is aligned to the RCEM curriculum and delivered in a high-fidelity, simulation-rich environment.
Course Fees: 495
- Course focus
HALO interventions are uncommon but life-saving. This course emphasises: indication recognition, threshold decision-making, human factors under stress, and stepwise procedural execution with coached deliberate practice and structured debrief.
Procedures taught
Emergency Open (Clamshell) Thoracotomy
Learning outcomes (RCEM-aligned)
- Recognise indications and contraindications for each HALO procedure and articulate a clear decision threshold.
- Apply human factors principles (leadership, communication, cognitive offloading) under time pressure.
- Perform resuscitative thoracotomy and manage the immediate resuscitation priorities post-procedure.
- Manage maternal arrest/peri-arrest and deliver resuscitative hysterotomy with time-critical discipline.
- Perform lateral canthotomy and recognise red flags requiring urgent decompression.
- Perform knee arthrocentesis safely, including sample selection and post-procedure care.
Who it’s for
Emergency physicians, surgeons and anaesthetists (resident doctor and consultant levels) who attend trauma calls and manage peri-arrest or time-critical deterioration in the Emergency Department. Suitable for UK and international practice.
